Dating back in 1915 (after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in America), it was previously known as Negro History Week. The movement was created by the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland. Back then Negro History Week was celebrated by organizing local gatherings and history clubs to host performances and lectures.
